The Raptiva brain infection side effect is called Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (a.k.a. PML). Although this disease is relatively poorly understood, scientists have made some educated guesses about what causes it. In four out of five normal adults, there's a virus called the John Cunningham virus (JC virus). This virus is typically dormant – inactive – but in certain people it can suddenly become active and do damage to the central nervous system.

The precise biochemistry of how the recalled drug Raptiva interplays with the T-cells to put patients at a higher risk of Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy has not been worked out. But the correlation between PML risk and the use of Raptiva to control psoriasis has been striking.

All told, since 2003, nearly 50,000 people have been prescribed the medication. The degeneration of myelin caused by Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy can cause patients to get dizzy, suffer impaired cognition and loss of vision, and lose coordination.
